Have declared today Joshua day. Too hot to do much else but read and study for next weeks Sunday school lesson.
Was reading and realized something...Joshua followed in some mighty big footsteps and when the leadership role fell on his shoulders it must have felt very heavy.
What should he do? he must have thought. Where could he turn after all the leaders of the older generation were all gone, Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Phinehas...all gone? Only Joshua and Caleb remained.
Yet...the movement they started couldn't just stand still, and the next step was to cross the Jordan River with around 3 million people in tow. How was he going to persuade all those people to cross the river and then do fierce battle on the other side with armies that greatly outnumbered them?
So Joshua turned to God...and to His Word and this magnificent challenge came to his soul...and it took my breath away!
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8
At that point Joshua must have realized he didn't need Moses. He had what Moses had. He had Gods Word to guide him. With Gods Word in his hand, and its truth in his heart there was nothing that he couldn't handle...no matter what might happen he would never have to look far to know what to do. He must search the scriptures and be governed by them.
Joshua had a lamp for his feet and a light for his path! psalm 119:105
His own courage and experience, his own wisdom would never be enough for what he was going to face.
But he had the Bible...and he accomplished all the Lord set out for him to do.
And so do we, we have the Bible...but we have all of it, Old and New Testament! We should study the Bible daily and be so steeped in it that we instinctively know what God has to say concerning anything we might be facing.
we need to remember...
God doesn't leave us to our own resources. He has given us His knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
In other words we have what peter calls, a more sure word of prophecy...one to which we need to pay close attention...as unto a light that shineth in a dark place. 2 peter 1:19
And that dear hearts and gentle people who live and love in my hometown...is one of the reasons I study the Bible...why we should all study the Bible.
These are perilous times and getting more so everyday...so this bit of enlightenment for us as Christians becomes huge.
Amen.
