Asking all brothers and sisters in Christ to join in prayer for peace in the Middle East, and for the conversion of ALL -- that they may come to know the true peace and comfort found only in our Lord Jesus Christ.
VATICAN CITY, JULY 20, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Given the escalation of violence, Benedict XVI has named Sunday as a day of prayer and penance for peace in the Middle East.
A communique' issued today by the Vatican press office said the decision was due to the "great concern" with which the Holy Father follows "the fate of all the affected peoples."
With this initiative, the Pope invites "the pastors and faithful of all the particular Churches, and all believers of the world, to implore from God the precious gift of peace," explained the Vatican communique'.
In particular, the Bishop of Rome appeals for prayer to the Lord "for an immediate cease-fire between the sides, for humanitarian corridors to be opened in order to bring help to the suffering peoples and for reasonable and responsible negotiations to begin to put an end to objective situations of injustice that exist in that region."
According to the Pontiff, "the Lebanese have the right to see the integrity and sovereignty of their country respected, the Israelis, the right to live in peace in their state, and the Palestinians have the right to have their own free and sovereign homeland."
The communique' ends with Benedict XVI's appeal "to charitable organizations to help all the people struck by this pitiless conflict."

unfortunatly this peace would be a false peace, at least that is what i believe because the one to stop this might just be the antichrist.
and as nice as it sounds not ALL will be saved yet we still will preach the Gospel of Jesus, His death, burial, and ressurection and that "ye must be born again" time seems to be getting short and as this war continues we need to realize that it doesn't surprise God in the leaast this is happening. He is still in control and still on His throne. if this war is a sign of the times and God uses this as a precursor to us being raptured then it is in His hands because even through death and destruction He will be glorified.
i reckon what i am saying is that i am praying for God's will in all this.

I pray for the Peace of Jerusalem.
He is the only way for true peace to come.
"...Even so, come, Lord Jesus."
Amen.

who is the "pope" calling the pitiless?
By the definition of the word, it sounds like he is saying we should support the wrong side.
pitiless adj 1: without mercy or pity; "an act of ruthless ferocity"; "a monster of remorseless cruelty" [syn: remorseless, ruthless, unpitying] 2: deficient in humane and kindly feelings [syn: unkind]

I would caution that we as Christians have only one Holy Father. He is Jehovah God.
"And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. " Matthew 23:9

wow. I was concerned that coming from the pope, this request might be uncomfortable for some people. But for all of our differences, I believed -- I hoped -- that praying for peace and conversions would surely be common ground among us. I am sincerely sorry for posting.

" Matthew 23:9 Jdg 17:10 Micah then said to him, "Dwell with me and be a father and a priest to me, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, a suit of clothes, and your maintenance." Jdg 18:19 They said to him, "Be silent, put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest." 1Co 4:15-16 For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

It hit me wrong last night when I read his words and still does today, but I know you meant well and I wasn't lashing out at you. I get upset with these "religious leaders" that don't have a clue what this conflict is really all about. Love in Christ, Nita

I am sincerely sorry for posting. i would say that these are common ground but the peace i pray for for over there is the peace only Jesus can give after a person is born again. if God wants to use this war or whatever you want to call it to bring Glory to Himself then so be it. i will continue to pray for God's will to be done over there.

I would have to agree with rednek32, as the scriptures say: 1 Thessalonians 5:3 - For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. The words "peace and safety" is a slogan which was often used by the Roman Empire and is associated with a false sense of safety. The peace and safety that we as believers should harbour is the hope and assurance of Eternal Life, and being with the Lord and delivered from His wrath. We can pray for Peace in the Middle East, however I doubt that this will be resolved until the coming of the Lord, but His will be done. The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, this is the peace that we need to pray for. Without it, there is no real lasting comfort. God Bless!

Everyone here who knows me knows I am a very big supporter of Israel and believe they are in the right in this conflict. That said, an Israeli bomb (for example) dropped on a target, no matter how legitimate the target may be, can't distinguish between friend, foe and innocent bystander. It simply explodes without pity and anyone inside its blast radius dies. " It is well that war is so terrible -- lest we should grow too fond of it."--Robert E. Lee

With all due respect Lori,
I suggest you carefully read the statement of Faith posted at the top of this MB. If there is anything you don't understand anyone here would be glad to explain further. If there is any part of that statement with which you do not agree you may want to reconsider your membership in this Message Board.
As I see it, no one here ascribes to Apostolic Succession nor could we. Jehovah God is our Father and the Bible our final authority in all matters. We support Israel and pray for God's will in the matter of the current problems in the Middle East.
Respectfully submitted, Duck
