“ And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends” (Zechariah 13:6). THERE IS SOMETHING IN HEAVEN THAT MAN PUT THERE
There is something in heaven that man put there! Can the hand of man mar a place so fair, That is filled with the depth and the breadth and the height Of His marvelous love? Where there is no night, But the choirs of the angels forever rejoice In the glory of God? At the sound of His voice The music of circling spheres is stilled And all the wide reaches of heaven are filled With wondering worship and praise — And yet, Help us, Lord, that we never forget, There is something in heaven that man put there — (Our shame, but forever His glory who bare Our offenses)—behold at the mercy seat The scars in His hands and His side and His feet!

“ And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son . . . For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry” (Luke 15:21-24). PRODIGAL
Take back Thy wandering child, take back These feet which went astray, Though once I vowed that I would walk Within Thy paths alway.
Take back my hands and wash them clean, For they are stained with sin; Take back this erring heart, and make Me Thine without, within.
Take back Thy child. Dry were the husks, And filthy were the swine. Why did I leave Thy table, Lord, And that rich fare of Thine?
Take back this child ? Most Holy God, How dare I hope that Thou Wouldst ever love again the poor Stained thing which I am now?
“For thee My spotless robe to wear, For thee the shoes, the ring, For thee the festal board is set, The merrymakers sing.
“Thou couldst not drift beyond My love, No matter how defiled. Rejoice! My son is home again, And I have back My child!”

“ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL
“His name shall be wonderful.” This Babe for whom Even in village inn, there was no room?
The lowing of cattle was His lullaby, Though caroling angels were thronging the sky.
“His name shall be wonderful.” This little Lad, Living so simply, and so plainly clad?
“His name shall be wonderful.” This Carpenter, Known from His childhood by each villager?
“His name shall be wonderful.” Spat upon, shamed, Tortured and crucified, how is He named
Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, He who one dark day Golgotha's road trod?
His name shall be wonderful—Jesus, God's Son! His Word has promised and it shall be done.
Not meek and lowly, despised among men; This same Lord Jesus is coming again
With clouds and great glory, to reign here below, And all men shall praise Him and all knees shall bow.
From ocean to ocean His name shall be heard— Wonderful name of our wonderful Lord!

“ For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). THE GIFT
I minted some coins from my good works, And I sought to buy The rarest treasures of heaven Or earth or sky. To God my bright pennies were nothing, There was nothing that they could buy, But He made me a gift of salvation. The dear Lord bought it, not I!

“ Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:21). EASTER MORNING
When to the tomb men bore Him, Leaving Him there, The birds that He loved grieved for Him, Mute with despair.
The lilies, His handiwork, shivered Out in the sun, The stars hid their faces, fearing What man had done.
The raindrops wept at His stillness Deep in the tomb, And the winds were hushed as they circled His quiet room.
When He arose in the dawning Men did not know, But the little birds saw Him, and caroled, Loving Him so;
And the smallest buds of the lilies Burst into bloom, Watching Him folding the grave clothes, Leaving the tomb!

“ To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:6-7). ACCEPTED IN THE BELOVED
I have hungered and thirsted after God And the place of His abode, So He broke my bonds and He set me free. On the wings of the wind I rode,
Cleaving the cool blue realms of space, Past planets and suns I pressed, Till I came to the City whose lights gleamed far, The end of my soul's long quest.
There God Himself was upon His throne; The doorposts moved as He spoke, The seraphim hid with their wings their eyes, And the temple was filled with smoke;
And “Holy, Holy!” the angels sang. (In my heart there was no good thing). And “Holy, Holy!” the chant came back. (I trembled, remembering).
Then my guilty soul cried, “Woe is me, It were better that I were dead!” But God leaned down from His throne and spoke, “My child, hast thou not read,
“I behold thee robed in My righteousness, And I cannot see thy sin I gave My Son, and He gave His life That thou mightest enter in!”

“ He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled” (John 3:29). IS THERE A STIRRING IN HEAVEN?
Is there a stirring in heaven? Do those who have gone before Gather in eager clusters, Close by the golden door?
Are the beautiful mansions ready, Built by the dear Lord's hand For the Bride of His love, who has tarried So long in a foreign land?
Are the wistful-eyed angels watching At heaven's parapet, Scanning the far horizons, Grieving, “Not coming yet!
“Not coming yet; she tarries, But hark how her prayers arise, Pleading that He will call her, And meet her in the skies.
“Ah, the Bridegroom's heart is eager And tender toward His Bride; And soon our eyes shall behold her At last, at last by His side!
“Not long till the marriage supper Of the Lamb whom we adore, For there is a stirring in heaven We never knew before!”

“ And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works” (Revelation 20:12). THOSE WHO ARE LEFT BEHIND
Swiftly the shadows lengthen, Hushed is my heart, and awed, Poised for flight at His summons, The call of the Son of God! (What of the lost and the blind, The ones who are left behind)?
I, who shall look on His beauty, And hear His voice, tender and sweet; They, who shall never see Him, Save once, at His Judgment Seat (Yet the Lord came to seek and to find Those who are left behind).
Solemn these moments of waiting. Lord, let me search my heart— Have I given my last ounce of treasure And strength—have I done my part? (Grave their fate deep on my mind, The ones who are left behind!)

“ Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father” (I Thessalonians 1:3). WAITING FOR JESUS
Waiting for Jesus. Trusting His Word, Simply believing His “Thus saith the Lord,” Reading the signs that His coming is nigh, Daily expecting our Lord from the sky.
Waiting for Jesus, working for Him; Solemn our hearts as these last moments flee, Bringing us nearer the day He will ask, “Soul whom I bought, did you do aught for Me?”
Waiting for Jesus, dreaming of Him, Forgetting our pain and the darkness of night, Hushing our hearts as the moment draws near When hope becomes rapture, and faith becomes sight!
Waiting for Jesus? Some glorious dawn The terrors and shadows of night shall be gone, Our pain be forgotten, our tears wiped away! Come quickly, Lord Jesus, come quickly, we pray!

“ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (II Peter 1:19). WAITING
There is a strange hush in my soul, A stirring in my heart, A singing eagerness for flight, As one who would depart,
And in the sentient, waiting air A hint of brushing wings I strain against my fetters and The pull of earthly things.
There is a quickening sense of light, Of dawns about to break, As glory paints the morning sky To bid the earth awake.
Come quickly, Lord, and break our bonds At last, and set us free, And soaring, we shall rise, and dwell Forevermore with Thee!

“ And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice” (I Kings 19:11-12). HE ANSWERED FROM MY HEART
I sought through a thousand dreams for Him, I sent my spirit far, Coursing the uttermost reaches of space, Searching each separate star.
I sought Him in storm, and in lightning flash, In earthquake and fire and flood; I scaled the heights and I plumbed the depths In my search for the living God.
Then wearied, I wept on my pillow at night, And I prayed, “My Lord, if Thou art, Unseen by men, may we hear Thy voice?” And He answered me from my heart!

“ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20). THE VOICE OF ONE WHO WEPT
Today I heard the voice of one Who wept in far-off lands Because of sin and misery, And begged with outstretched hands For one small lamp to light his dark. Now fain I would have slept, So stopped my ears, but in my heart That sobbing voice still wept.
And then I heard the voice of One Who counted not the cost, But left His ivory palaces To seek and save the lost. He said, “The sound of one who weeps Is coming up to Me. Dost thou forget that last command Which I gave unto thee,
“To preach My word to all the world?” . . . O bitter be our shame! Still hopeless millions walk the earth Who never heard His name, And still the world spends lavishly In every crowded mart, And still the voice of him who wept Is sobbing in my heart!

“ But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name” (III John 14). TO MY FRIENDS ON CHRISTMAS DAY
Dear Lord, my friends have been to me Interpreters of love divine, And in their kindness I have seen Thine everlasting mercy shine. And so I pray, on this Thy day, That Thou wilt search through gifts of Thine, And choose Thy rarest, fairest ones, To shower upon these friends of mine!

“ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law” (I Corinthians 15:55-56). THE FACE OF DEATH
Death wears a strange and dreadful face. For days and months and years I would not look, but turned aside With loathing and with fears.
But now I know that to God's child Death never comes alone To fright the soul, for with him walks My Lord, my Blessed One!
And so when death shall come to me I need not see his face, For I shall turn and hide my eyes Upon His breast whose grace
Abounds beyond my deepest need, Beyond my latest breath. And He will gently take me home, and I Shall never see the face of death.

“ Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). “HE EVER LIVETH TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR US”
You may forget to pray for me, my friend. O shame, I may forget to pray for you, but praise His name There ever liveth One who stands before God's throne, And day and night makes intercession for His own!
Can fear or worry, sin or failure, find a place Within this guarded life of mine? O matchless grace Of Him who knows and meets my every need as He, The wondrous Lord of glory, daily prays for me!

“ Go ye to all the world!” GO YE TO ALL THE WORLD
And have we gone? Are we unruffled, knowing that the dawn, In heathen lands means but a day begun, Another day without the blessed Sun Of Righteousness and Peace, another day When souls who have forever lost the way Sink deeper in the dark morass of sin, Hopeless and lost, at last to enter in To an eternal night?. . .
Ah, God of love And tender pity, from Thy throne above Beholding them, and willing not that one Should ever perish, Thou didst send Thy Son, Who bought them with His blood. But unto us, To us, Thou didst entrust the glorious And wondrous news, and into our weak hands Didst place the torch to lighten heathen lands!
Strengthen our arms, dear Lord, to hold it high! O ransomed of the Lord, if you and I Fail in this thing, “Their blood,” I hear Him say, “Will I require of you upon that day!”
“Go ye to all the world! Is it a task To do for Me this one last thing I ask?”

“ And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:2-3). AND SO I LOVE
When I was just a little child I loved my mother so, I liked to touch what she had touched, And always tried to know
The things she loved the best of all So I could love them too. I made a secret list of them Although she never knew.
And now that I am grown I love My heavenly Father so, And like a little child again I humbly seek to know
The things which are most dear to Him, So I may love them too, And thus draw closer to His heart, And so I love—the Jew!

“ And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Luke 21:28). THIS EASTER DAY
Since first the stone was rolled away There never dawned an Easter Day Like this! Although death rides the sky Until the dead in windrows lie On sodden fields all drenched with blood, Yet faith has heard a word from God, “Look up! Behold, He comes again That One whose right it is to reign!”
O risen Lord, to Thee we pray That on this Resurrection Day Thy hand will part the shrouding skies Which hide Thy face, and we shall rise With our beloved dead, to be Forevermore at home with Thee!

“ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (II Peter 1:19). THE “MORE SURE WORD”
Though men's hearts fail for fear Of what is yet to be, We have a Word more sure, The Word of prophecy, Whereunto we do well That we take heed, for we,
Even His feeblest ones, Are children of the light And not of darkness. God Has touched our eyes with sight To read signs of His times, Which if we read aright
Our hearts grow bold with hope. For He has said, “The wise, The wise, shall understand.” Lift up your longing eyes, O watchers for His dawn, Behold His daystar rise!

“ Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). BLESSED HOPE
There's a trembling in my heart As I watch the year depart,
There's a glory and a light, And a hope that grows more bright.
Before this coming year has gone, Some wistful dusk, some misty dawn,
Or burning noon my Lord may come For me at last, and take me home!
Oh, I've read about my Lord In the pages of His Word,
And I've learned about His ways As He ordered all my days;
I have leaned upon His arm As He shielded me from harm,
And I've even heard Him speak When I was afraid, or weak.
Yes, my cup is running o'er Yet I yearn for more and more
Of His riches and His grace . . . This year I may see His face!
