TWILIGHT
My heart breaks anew every evening When shadows are gathering fast In my soul, and the courage and sunlight Of daytime has ebbed and is past.
And all of my being is longing For him who shared twilights with me. The lamps of my home burn but dimly, The lonely dusk deepens, but he
Comes never with cheery laughter, To scatter my shadows away . . . He lives far away, in the glory And light of God's presence alway;
In a home where we two shall be dwelling, And needing not sun, stars, nor moon! I KNOW, and I wait in my twilight; But O, blessed Jesus, come soon!

FORGOTTEN LAUGHTER
I will learn to sing praises to Thee, O Lord, For this bitter cross Thou hast given to me. I will fling out the banners of courage, Lord. Hark to the bugles of victory!
I will work, I will trust, I will pray, dear Lord, And even rejoice in the dewy dawn; But do not ask me for laughter, Lord — For he who taught laughter to me is gone.

MENDICANT
When someone speaks of you in praises sweet, Beloved, I could almost hug their feet!
It is as though for just a little while They brought you back to me, your voice, your smile;
As though they snatched you from the arms of death And you were here for one brief radiant breath!
Always, when I am talking with my friends, I pray, before the conversation ends,
That they will speak your name . . .. A mendicant For crumbs of memories which they grant!

JASPER WALLS
O jasper walls, with gates of pearl, I see you shine afar, A Paradise of loveliness Where all the blessed are!
O jasper walls, with gates of pearl, When shall I enter in, And be forever through with grief And tears and pain and sin?
O jasper walls, with gates of pearl, Guard well my Love for me, I have a rendezvous with him For all eternity!
O walls of jasper, emerald, Of amethyst and beryl, My tender Lord is calling me, — Swing wide your gates of pearl!

HOME
Suppose that I knew nothing of That home where you have gone, Save that it was a lovely land, Quite distant, vague, unknown.
But O, dear heart, I take His Word, And there before my eyes The city rears its golden spires Against the glowing skies!
I even know its measurements, Its depth, its length, its height, And that it needs no sun because The Lord God is its light.
I see its jasper walls, the gates Through which you entered in, Each gate a single lustrous pearl. My love, what must have been
Your awe and wonder and delight! What does one say or do When all that scene of loveliness First bursts upon the view?
And did you realize at once That you were there to stay? Your eyes beheld the Lord Christ's face Upon that very day
Which had begun for you with pain And weariness and care . . . How swift the miracles of God! A breath, and you were there!
Now in your heart is ecstasy, And on your lips a song Of praises as you lightly walk The golden streets along;
Or lifting up your eyes unto The distant hills of God, You scale their beckoning heights with ease, Your feet with rapture shod.
You stroll beside the river's brim, Or rest beneath the shade Of that eternal tree whose leaves Will never fall nor fade.
This is the home which we shall share As endless ages roll, The home His blood has bought for us. O praise the Lord, my soul!

MARRIAGE
The first time that the word was said It seemed that it would strike me dead, And dazed, I knew not whom they meant. What of the sweet years we have spent
Together here? My lips refuse To frame the dreadful word, nor use A term which cannot be applied To me. It is as though they lied.
Suppose he moved across the sea, Would I then be his “widow”? He Has moved a million worlds away And yet he is alive today.
Does distance make a “widow”? O, There are some precious things I KNOW: I know that I am still his wife, And shall be all my earthly life;
And still his wife in some sweet sense, Some lovely, heavenly recompense, As all the endless ages roll! O bless the Lord, bless Him, my soul!

A DAY IN JUNE
The mocking bird sings at break of dawn, Never caring that you are gone.
Butterflies softly drift with the breeze, Bits of color among the trees;
The branches bloom and the young leaves start Nor know of the drought within my heart.
And quite unheeding, this afternoon A small boy whistled a merry tune.
The setting sun paints the canvas sky As it did in the days when you and I
Watched the pageant with bated breath, Together, with never a thought of death.
Ah, Junes may come and Junes may go, And suns revolve, but this I know,
That I shall look into your eyes Some perfect day in Paradise!

FALLING LEAVES
The leaves are falling now, dear Love; Yet when you went away The sweet young leaves were fresh and green Upon that April day.
The leaves are falling now, dear Love. You loved them more than anything,— A promise and a miracle, The little tender leaves of spring.
The leaves are falling fast, dear Love, And we have been six months apart. The leaves are falling fast, dear Love; I feel them fall upon my heart.

WARRIOR
I would not falter in my task Because of tears; Time hastens, and I would not waste The fleeting years.
Bind Thou my wounds and let me fight Through noontide's heat; Let sorrow's flood sweep not my soul Down to defeat.
The battle won, Thy hand shall wipe My tears away; But let me fight, not weep, dear Lord, Until that day!

COMING HOME
It is time for you to come home again, Time for this nightmare to end; My heart has borne all that a heart can bear. Now the evening shadows blend;
And I sit in the dusk and wait in vain The opening of the door. Dear Love, you have been away too long, — You always came home before!
How I thrilled to the sound of your hurrying feet! The hours of the long gray day, In the warmth and security of your arms Vanished and melted away.
Thank God for the message which sings in my heart, “Beloved, I am at home, Beyond the stars, and I watch the door, Waiting for you to come!”

SOMETIMES I WONDER
Sometimes I wonder, when I pray, If meeting you, He stops to say, “I heard from your belov'd today.”
If so, how well I know the way Your heart will lift, and you will say, “Grant her Thy peace, dear Lord, today!”

GUARDIAN ANGELS
Dear, have you seen your guardian angel yet? I like to dream about the day you met,
And finally looked into the very face Of that protecting being who kept pace
With you through all your groping earthly days, And kept you safe upon life's shadowed ways;
And held you up, nor left you once alone, Lest you should dash your foot against a stone.
We used to talk about them, you and I, Celestial servants sent from out the sky!
We loved the thought of angels in our home, — Sometimes the shabby rooms burst into bloom . . .
I know that yours went back to God that day When your freed spirit, singing, slipped away;
But mine stays here to guard and comfort me, And keep me through the days until I see
His face and yours,—and so at last we four Shall dwell with Christ our Lord forevermore!

THE WAY TO PEACE
When we began our married life We chose a recipe For happiness through years to come; And it has proved to be
Wise, practical and true. It was That each should hold more dear The other's joy and welfare than His own. Each passing year
We found this brought us happiness. Now he has gone away, But I, rejoicing in his joy, Know gladness every day!

APART
“You see, we've never been apart For very long” — Just passing words I heard today Amid the throng.
But suddenly my heart relived Each aching year Since you went on ahead of me, My dear, my dear!

THE MESSAGE
Yesterday heaven's gates stood wide As a friend we cherished passed inside.
And all through that golden Town and fair, The word spread quickly that he was there.
I can see you hastening down the street, I can feel your gladness as you meet,
I can hear the eagerness in your voice Greeting him, “Brother, how I rejoice
To see you again.” Then tenderly, “What of my little Love, does she
Grieve too much?” And our friend would say, “She is waiting and longing for the day
She will see you again, and meanwhile she Clings to the Saviour's hand, and He
Strengthens her soul and dries her tears, Comforts her heart and allays her fears.
She is even writing a book again, Trying to serve Him with her pen;
And she sends her tenderest love to you.” O beloved, if you but knew
The comforting joy within my heart! We cannot be very far apart,
No long and weary journey away, For I sent you a message yesterday!

EXPLANATION
Dear one, I do not mean to write as though Your thoughts are always here with me below,
And yet, I am so limited, my mind Can only faintly guess at what you find
Within that land which now is home to you. What do you think, or feel, or see, or do?
I wonder if at times it does not seem As though you still are living in a dream.
The swelling music of the angel choirs Is ever falling sweetly on your ears;
And you, who loved so well the written Word, Are now within the presence of the Lord,
And see the Lamb of God upon His throne, In glory you have only guessed, not known.
Your raptured soul must be absorbed in Him Till even memories of me grow dim.
I know this dear, and yet, and yet, my heart Which after all is of your heart a part,
Dares dream your rapture will be more complete When we can bow together at His feet.

TODAY
Dear heart, I did such petty things today; I washed my hair, and filed some bills away; I pasted pictures in my kodak book, Lengthened a skirt to see how it would look;
I mended stockings, tried to write a rhyme, — Just foolish things, and wondered all the time What you were doing, living with the Lord. I longed to know, and so I searched His Word
For precious glimpses of your lovely home. Two months today! With eager feet you roam The distant hills of God which beckon you. Enchanting vistas stretch beyond the blue,
And shining golden roads lead on and on To new delights beyond comparison. The songs of angel choirs rise and fall; The glory of the Lord shines over all!
To think that you, who daily shared with me The simple human things of life, now see The King in all His beauty, and you know God's mysteries undreamed of here below!
I did such petty things all day, while you Walked there with wonder, far beyond the blue. But some day you will take me by the hand, And show me all the beauties of that land.
Together we shall stand before His face, Two trophies of His rich eternal grace!

TOGETHER
Friends dread to leave me here alone. Ah, Love, if they but knew I find within these empty rooms The very heart of you.
No sooner has the door been closed Than you are here with me In all the things you loved and touched, In tender memory.
The books you read and made your own, Each marking grown so dear; Your bath robe hanging on its hook. Sometimes I almost hear
Your loved voice reading from His Word, Your footsteps in the hall . . . Your shell collection, and your rocks, Are you not in them all?
The mirror whence your face looked out, I almost glimpse it yet. The pillow where your patient head Has lain; though it is wet
At times with my own bitter tears, It strangely comforts me; And there I rest and dream of what Eternity will be!

MY CUP RUNNETH OVER
Sometimes a very flood of joy Sweeps over me. How safe, how rich I am for all Eternity!
Sometimes the singing in my heart Will not be stilled; And all the shadows in my soul Are glory-filled.
Sometimes He sends a peace more deep Than I can tell, Because my loved ones are with Him, Joyful and well.
Sometimes I am so lifted up That earth grows dim; As John, on Patmos' lonely isle, Beholding Him.
Sometimes,—nay, every precious hour Of every day, My hand is warm within His own, My Light, my Way!
Sometimes I try in vain to count My goods and store. Joint heir with Christ the Lord! My cup Is running o'er!
Lord of that overflowing cup, Increase, I pray, My heart's capacity to hold Thy joy each day!
