A couple a few weeks back I saw on the local news a story about a Social Worker in Roanoke who got tired of seeing Foster Care Children be shifted around from home to home carrying all their belongings in garbage bags...
I remember seeing that too...before I retired. Tho I worked in Probation I remember court days and knowing the Foster Care Children because of their garbage bags...throw away children...tore at my heart to see them...
So when I saw that story on TV...it was like the Lord taping me on the shoulder and saying...feed my lambs and when I didn't move on it the first time out He showed me the story a second time a few weeks later...
So I approached Dan River Baptist Association about starting a Backpack Ministry...and will be presenting my proposal this Tuesday night at their Missions Committee Meeting...
I want to make sure every child in Foster Care in my county has a backpack with toiletry articles, a stuffed animal and a Bible...also want to expand that to include children who are homeless due to family circumstances and natural disasters...
Asking for your prayers in this endeavor...

Just thought I would give y'all a little update on Backpack Blessings...a Ministry of Hope...
Committee has met and we have started checking out prices of the things we want to include in the backpacks. We expanded it to include PJs and underwear...
It is so exciting. We have purchased 20 Backpacks from LL Bean and got a great deal...wanted to get really tough backpacks that will last so went to them...and they cut us a good deal to get us started.
we have started to let churches, VBS around the county, and WMUs...know what we are doing and hope to see donations come rolling in...
I would post our flyer but can't figure out how to do it...
Please keep Backpack Blessings in your prayers...

Marilyn, A lot of companies, including stores will donate items if you contact corporate offices or store managers, by way of letter on church letterhead explaining what you are doing. Store managers will usually take time to talk to you in person. It is a tax write off for them. We used to work with pee wee church camp and the director did this every year and got most of what she needed donated. Might be worth checking into, just FYI
