To be enjoined with God:
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
Until we're in His presence, prayer is our means of connection/communication.

That is a question being asked by a lady on our hometown MB. Why do we pray for other people by name?
There are a number of people in our little community who are ill or injured. There have been several tractor accidents. It's that time of year...
As she was praying for all of them she wondered why we pray for other people by name...
She reasoned the Lord knows who they are and what the problem is...

The easy answer is that God already knows who needs prayer and has known of the need even before it was a need.
It is kind of like the age-old question, why do we "pray" to ask the Lord to save us (the answer is that we really don't - God sees the desire of the heart and that is all God needs to know that someone is coming to Him). But we pray, or encourage others to pray, in accepting Christ in order that that person may be a part of the transaction. Romans 10:9, 10 does show that part of the process is the mouth is used to confess Christ.
So, to, we mention people in our prayers in order to make it more personal. It is acceptable to pray a blanket request for those that have needs, such as "bless the missionaries."
It is all about making the one praying feel more a part of the process - and one wonder, will be know in heaven who prayed for us by name?
This is just my pinyon.

Thanks Keith and Virgil...
But then the Bible exhorts us to pray for one another. In James it tells us to pray for those who are suffering and to sing Psalms with those who are joyful.
James also is the one who said we don't get what we ask for because we don't know how to ask.
It is an interesting question to me. I pray for others because I am concerned about them and their families. I have been praying for my own son for years and have no intention of dropping it. Maybe one day...the Lord will answer my prayers about my son.
We are to pray in the will of God...how do you pray in or out of God's will?
Then there is that wonderful passage in Luke 11...
"And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? " Luke 11:9-13
Am I mixing apples and oranges? Going all over the place...
I am asking the Lord like the apostles did, teach me to pray. I know prayer is powerful and have seen ample evidence of it...

We are to pray in the will of God...how do you pray in or out of God's will? It is God's will that none should perish but that all should have everlasting life, so it is front and center in God's will to pray for others to be saved. Praying for the sick is spoken of by James - and it is so very hard to really know "how" to pray in those cases, for we want God's purpose to be fulfilled in the sickness. Some times God uses sickness to drive home a lesson (or as chastisement). In some cases, as I believe in my own case - God allows sickness for the greater purpose - else I would not be busy adding godly Christian classics online for preachers and teachers and those seeking after biblical truth. We pray for the sick and they remain sick - not because our faith is not great enough (it isn't), but because God's overall purpose is being accomplished. Bottom line, I believe, is that those prayers outside of God's will are those that James spoke of as those things that we consume on our own lusts - like the winning lottery ticket or a new ferrari.
