Have been reading for the SS lesson in 1 Corinthians 6 this week and ran across something John Phillips wrote in his commentary, "Exploring 1 Corinthians."" Have always like Phillips commentaries and thought I would share this with you. This is what he said about societies acceptance of homosexuality as normal.
"Paul moves on from lustfulness to lawlessness. There is the sin against normality(effeminate) and there is the sin against nature(abusers of themselves with mankind). Both these sins have always been present in society, but when a society is healthy, its practitioners hide their shame. It is a mark of an apostate society when such sins flaunt themselves and are given status as an alternative lifestyle.
Such societies expose themselves to judgment"
"And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly... " 2 Peter 2:6
"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. " Jude 7
"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient..." Romans 1:26-28
"Exploring 1 Corinthians, John Phillips, pg. 127"
I thought it was very well put...
But Paul has hope even for such as them and later says to the saved at the Church in Corinth..."and such were some of you..." Paul said.
"...but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. "
Amen.
