Certain of my Brethren are very fond of preaching Christ in His Second Coming—I rejoice that they preach the truth concerning Christ Glorified, but, my Beloved, I do beseech you do not place your only hope on Christ Glorified, nor on Christ to come, but on “Christ Crucified.” Remember that in the matter of taking away sin, the first thing is not the Throne, but the Cross—not the reigning Savior—but the bleeding Savior! Not the King in His Glory, but the Redeemer in His shame. Care not to be studying dates of prophecies if burdened with sin, but seek your chief, your best comfort in the blood of Jesus Christ which cleanses us from all sin—here is the pole star of your salvation—sail by it and you shall reach the port of peace. [An excerpt from sermon delivered on Sunday Morning, December 3, 1865 by C. H. SPURGEON.]
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
As I walk the dusty roads, I need to be reminded sometimes what is important... -B

Nice post, bcool. Yes, I agree the cross is the central message of Christianity, as Paul said:
"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (I Corinthians 2:2).
Actually, the verse got me to thinking . . . if this is the only message that Paul preached . . . and it was, then true preaching can only be a salvation message.
Everything else, all the doctrinal truths, including the Christians "blessed hope" of the return of Christ . . . is teaching.
Therefore, teaching and preaching are definitely not the same thing, and preachers need to yes, preach "the whole counsel of God", but their preaching needs to be balanced . . . yet, the preaching of the cross must always be the central theme of every message - while using the rest of the doctrinal truths as secondary points . . . and that message: "Always be sure of your salvation, folks; and because you are saved - you can look forward to our Saviour's return."

I found it. Here is the paragraph taken from the sermon: Certain of my Brethren are very fond of preaching Christ in His Second Coming—I rejoice that they preach the truth concerning Christ Glorified, but, my Beloved, I do beseech you do not place your hope on Christ Glorified, nor on Christ to come, but on “Christ Crucified.” Remember that in the matter of taking away sin, the first thing is not the Throne, but the Cross—not the reigning Savior—but the bleeding Savior! Just based on the passage excerpted, I would say that Spurgeon is speaking here to the lost folks that are studying prophecy, but neglecting their eternal salvation.
I think there is a lot of that going on. You have your 7th Day Adventists that major in minors - elevating their idea of prophecy even above the cross (which they discount), we have a lot of websites that have a basis in prophecy - yet their members are from all across the board - assuming themselves to be saved, when in fact they don't know the first thing about God's simple plan of salvation.
I don't mean to be out of line or anything, or to speak for bcool. I am sure he/she is able to speak up for him/herself. This is just one of those topics that tend to get my preacher-side all riled up.
It makes for a very interesting discussion.

I think this site is a great representative of a well-balanced ministry. Yes, the consuming passion of everyone that posts here is excitement concerning our Lord's return for His Bride - the church.
But anyone would be hard-pressed not to find a constant emphasis and reminder of the Lord's power to saved. Daily we find Keith's verse posted and most of the time it is a verse directly impacting our personal relationship with the Lord as Saviour.
There is a cave overlooking a pond where the Lord is constantly praised for the saving of our worthless souls, so much so as one might think that it is the tears that are shed there that is the resevoir of the pond.
I am so happy that this is a site where, when from time to time we are reminded that we need to be concerned with the Cross more than the rapture that we don't all feel the need to circle our wagons in a defensive posture.
I would be heart-broken to learn that someone that visits this site missedt the great gathering in the presence of Jesus because he/she didn't understand how much God loves us and that He sent His Son to take their place on the Cross. I think we all know of some websites that are claiming to be "Christian Messageboards" where the chance that many of their members are lost and without hope, because their wagons are circled against the gospel and those that proclaim it.

Walking in the Light and Washed in the Blood No. 663 1 John 1:7 Hope this helps. -B the lurker................ PS. Oops! Somebody beat me to the punch. -- BBB: Spurgeon was probably directing his message to believers overall since his text of 1 John 1:7 affords believers reassurance concerning personal sin in the life. I would say, though, there was something for everybody. -B

Thanks guys! I love Spurgeon's sermons. One day I hope to hear Him in person. It was Spurgeon who helped me to understand why the Bema Seat Judgment is when it is. His work for the Lord is not done.
Spurgeon's Sermons are still leading people to the Lord! Shinning a light into this dark and lost world!
Amen!
