ICC Issues Arrest Warrant For Benjamin Netanyahu
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister, and several Hamas officials. The court accuses them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the ongoing war in Gaza and the October 2023 attacks that sparked Israel's offensive in Palestinian territory.
These warrants make Netanyahu, and others, internationally wanted suspects, likely deepening their diplomatic isolation and complicating efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in the 13-month-long conflict. However, the practical influence of the warrants may be limited, as Israel and its key ally, the United States, are not members of the ICC. Additionally, several Hamas officials named in the warrants have since been killed in the fighting.
The ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of intentionally depriving Gaza's civilian population of essential resources, including food, water, and medical supplies. The court also issued a warrant for Hamas leader Mohammed Deif.
