I was reminded of the old love song by Lynn Anderson, "I Never promised You a Rose Garden":
"I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.
When you take, you gotta give, so live and let live,
Or let go.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
I could promise you things like big diamond rings,
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover.
So you better think it over.
Well, if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true,
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter,
But what would it matter?
So smile for a while and let's be jolly:
Love shouldn't be so melancholy.
Come along and share the good times while we can.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes."
How life can be like a rose garden. So often we are caught on a thorn, and we are focused on the pain and the wounds. If we can open our hearts to Christ. If we can take a step back and see the perfect blooms nestled amongst the thorns. If we can lean over and savor the sweet fragrance which God has bestowed upon the perfect petals. If we can behold the morning drops of dew which glitters like diamonds in the morning sun.
We sojourn in an alien land, but along the pathway God has provided beauty and a glimpse of the Glory which awaits those who have received the Son of God, God manifest in the flesh, and desiring that all will come unto Him, and become the children of the Living God through the spirit of adoption.
May we look for the perfect roses nestled amongst life's thorns, and may we know the Love which God has for His children from before the foundation of the earth.
